The NCCT is a practical, hands-on resource pack designed to enhance the capacity of mental health services to work with people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.
It contains a set of National Cultural Competency Standards and a range of practical aids, including an organisational self-assessment checklist. It is designed to be implemented progressively at an organisational level.
The NCCT is for use by all mental health service providers in Australia, including public, private and non-government organisations.
All mental health services need to be able to work transculturally considering the increasingly diverse population of Australia. Almost a quarter of Australia’s population was born overseas from over 200 countries, and WA is the most culturally diverse state in Australia. Services that are not equipped to be culturally responsive can prevent people from accessing appropriate care.
The NCCT is aligned with Standard 4: Diversity Responsiveness of the National Standards for Mental Health Services and will assist services in addressing this Standard.
The NCCT will also assist compliance with the 4th National Mental Health Plan, the National Mental Health Policy 2008 as well as legislation that requires mental health services to be accessible and appropriate to all Australians.
We will be offering free training and ongoing support in implementation.
This is funded and supported by the Mental Health Commission.
